NISRA
The Central Survey Unit (SCU) is the leading social survey research organisation in Northern Ireland and is one of the main business areas of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) . The CSU provides a survey research services to Northern Ireland Government Departmentsand the wider public sector in Northern Ireland.
Overview
Survey interviewers at the CSU have been using tablet PC's for over 10 years. but over this time the tablets became slow and unreliable, at a cost to productivity. Furthermore, most of the units were discontinues by the various manufacturers, causing a huge problem with service and support. The CSU needed new tablet PC's that could meet its specifications for the screen size, battery life, portability and usability.
The research agency wanted machines that could easily be operated by its non-technical survey interviewers, many of whom had very little experience using computers or laptops. Interviewers needed to be able to simply point and click the appropriate button on the screen without needing to understand any keyboard or mouse operations. Also, with the interviewers out on the road all day, a full day of battery life was compulsory. Another requirement was that the tablets had to be able to securely synchronise data electonically with the office database once the interview was complete.
